Professional Wrestling

For as long as I can remember I thought Pro Wrestling was absurd: a bunch of sweaty men dressed up in strange costumes pretending to be beating each other up. Not only is it "fake", but it comes complete with corny story-lines! Yes, that's right, its a soap opera!

Now be prepared to lose every ounce of respect for me you might have had.

Are you ready?

Really? Ok:

I'm suddenly addicted to World Wrestling Entertainment's (WWE) professional wrestling. There. I said it. Its been documented on the Internet. Everyone can read it - family, friends, future employers. My chances of ever getting a good job have just been flushed down the toilet. Ok, perhaps that is a bit excessive, but not necessarily!

It all started on October 3, 2005. Before this day I was clueless about pro wrestling. I mean I knew who Hulk Hogan was. I'd heard of Triple H and seen Mick Foley somewhere before, but really ...I didn't know anything.

Now, because we only have basic basic cable - the lowest cost cable package that still lets us get cable Internet, the only good channels we really get are TBS and USA. On October 3, USA aired "WWE Homecoming" - the first edition of WWE RAW to be aired on the USA Network after being aired for five years on Spike TV which of course, with basic cable, we don't get.

There was nothing else on television that night and apparently Jim used to watch WWE while he was in the Air Force ...because his roommate was really into it (or so he says). They'd even bought a few WWE Pay-per-views, but he hadn't seen any wrestling since then and thought it would be fun to watch. I was kind of interested I guess because I'd been seeing the TV commercials announcing the show for over a month and wanted to see what all the hype was about.

To make a long story short, I ate up every second of the show and fell head over heals in lust with the current WWE Champion, John Cena. I really don't know how it happened. It just did. To quote my mother, "oh God my daughter has gone blue collar." Hahahaha. I love my mother.

Since October I don't think I've missed a single edition of WWE RAW, and have not missed an episode of SmackDown! since late January or so. I WOULD have been watching SmackDown! since October as well, but Jim said we didn't get the UPN Network on which it airs. We found out we did get UPN when we rented a cable box so we could order WWE pay-per-views to ...crap.

Yes, we watch some of the WWE pay-per-views as well. So far I've only bought one: Royal Rumble 2006, although I'll be watching WrestleMania 22 this Sunday also. Anyway - we had to get digital cable in order to get a cable box to order PPVs and found UPN on the little channel guide thing you can flip through on the screen ..its so cool! And ever since we found UPN I've been watching Smackdown!

I love both shows, although RAW is my favorite. Aside from John Cena, my favorite wrestlers include (in no particular order) Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Undertaker, Rob Van Dam, The Big Show, Kane, Matt Hardy, Scotty 2 Hotty, Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels, Rey Mysterio, Chris Benoit, and Mick Foley. Ok I take that back, Big Show and Kane are my second favorites.

When I get addicted to something, it consumes my entire life. The majority of the Wikipedia articles I've been editing since January are related to pro wrestling. The majority of the websites I've been accessing since January are related to pro wrestling. I've joined the WWE Fantasy wrestling thing on www.wwe.com and have my own little team.

...And to top it all, earlier this month Jim and I drove to Waco to see a WWE RAW live event. I got to see  John Cena, in action and beating the heck out of Edge! Yes I'm really that into it ...I got into all the various crowd chants, the cheers ..the boos, all of it. I came home from the event with a $15 program, a $25 John Cena shirt, and a $20 John Cena "bear" (its dressed like him). Its also been rumored that I keep a John Cena action figure on my desk, but that has yet to be confirmed.

In addition, I've picked up several issues of WWE RAW magazine over the months and read each one cover to cover. There is no way anyone else has ever learned so much about pro wrestling in such a short amount of time. I know I'm crazy, but I just love it right now. I would have never imagined myself a professional wrestling fan in a million years ..but here I am! Wooooooooooo!

Edit May 2015: Life got busy with a lot of "real" things and I haven't really watched more than a handful of episodes in 5+ years or so. It still amuses me from time to time if I happen to have "free time" and am channel surfing. Free time is in high demand around here with all the volunteerism I've filled my life with since about 2011. :)
